New York state requires that you be at least 21 years old to acquire your Class A license. This waiver allows drivers under the age of 21 to obtain a limited CDL license valid only in New York.

If Your Hauling Hazardous Materials

Anyone who drives a hazmat truck must undergo a full background check. This is done to ensure that you have no criminal history. A mental health exam will be part of this background check. Keep in mind that you must be a United States citizen to get clearance to transport hazardous materials.

You should be aware that your CDL is the only license that you are allowed to carry by law. This means that you need to surrender your Class D license as soon as you get your CDL. The Class D license is the standard passenger license in New York. You could be fined as much as $5,000 for not surrendering your old license. The license needs to be renewed every five years.

In most cases, your Class D license may be good enough to do so legally.
