DOT regulations must be followed in Indiana. This states how many hours you can drive in row as well as the total number of hours you can work in a 7-day period. Failure to adhere to the DOT regulations can lead to fines and even license suspension.

Indiana CDL Requirements

Applicants for an Indiana Commercial Driver's License must hold a valid Indiana standard, chauffeur or passenger chauffeur license for at least one year. For driving solely within the state, the driver must be at least 18 years old. If a career driving a school or passenger bus is planned, the applicant must be 21 or older.

Before applying for a Commercial Driverís License, a U.S. Department of Transportation medical exam form must be completed by a doctor. A medical exam is required every two years in order to maintain a CDL.

Indiana requires both written and driving tests in order to qualify for a CDL. Proof of Social Security number, identity, residence and lawful status must be presented along with the medical form and application.

All drivers must take the general knowledge written test. Additional tests and fees are required to qualify for endorsements like air brakes, school buses, tankers or hazardous materials. Once these tests are mastered, the driver is issued a CDL learner's permit.

Test results are good for 180 days. Three CDL permits can be issued in a two year period, and each permit is valid for 6 months. The fee for the permit is $16. The written testing can be done at any Motor Vehicles office. A passing score is 80% or higher.

The driving test consists of a road test, pre-trip vehicle inspection test, and basic controls test. A driver can only take the tests once per day. Full fees are due each time the test is taken. The fee is about $100 if the driver provides the vehicle of the same class as the desired CDL, or $150 if the testing site supplies the vehicle. There are about a dozen authorized testing sites scattered throughout the state, and most require an appointment for testing.

Once the tests are passed, a Skills Test Certificate is issued. The applicant then takes their unexpired driverís license, proof of Social Security number, medical report, CDL learner's permit and Skills Test Certification to any Motor Vehicles Branch, where a CDL will be issued. This must be done within 30 days of the issuance of the Skills Test Certificate. The license is valid for four years and the cost is $30.

- Standard CDL: $30

- CDL learner's permit: $6

Note: A CDL is not needed to legally operate farm equipment, emergency and rescue vehicles, fire trucks, or military vehicles. These all have specific operator certifications you can obtain.
