Before you enroll in a CDL training course, you will want to consider the many industries available in Georgia, including general freight, cement, grocery and courier. Each of the industries has perks and requirements that they have to get hired in the industry, so it’s a good idea to know what you need prior to getting your CDL.
Benefits to Working in a Truck Driving Career
To access the majority of jobs, you only need your CDL. While more experience can get you the higher paying jobs, it still only requires a CDL. You won’t need a 2 or 4-year degree, which can save you a lot on student loans.
Important Laws & Regulations
Applying for a CDL in Georgia follows a specific process. You must be at least 18 years of age and if you wish to be an interstate truck driver, you must be at least 21. Also, if you wish to have the HAZMAT endorsement on your license, you must submit to a background check by the TSA.
There is a mandatory revocation that you need to be aware of in Georgia. If you are convicted of a violation three times, you will be declared a habitual violator and your CDL could be revoked for 5 years. If you are unfit to drive, either by disease or physical disability or a drug addiction, you could also face mandatory revocation in the state.
Each CDL also has add-ons. Both can get the hazardous material, Haz-Mat, endorsement which allows the driver to haul dangerous materials. This is a separate test and must be taken each time the driver renews his license. The class B CDL has a passenger endorsement which certifies the driver to drive school buses and tour buses.

Georgia CDL RequirementsIn the state of Georgia, if you want to drive a vehicle, of any combination, that has a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) that is over 26,000 pounds as long as the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle that is being towed is over 10,000 pounds, you must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
After you have been trained, and have studied the commercial driver's manual, you can apply for your commercial driver's license. The application is two pages long and you must attach a photo of yourself to the application. You must be at least 18 years old to apply. If you are 18 years old, however, you will only be allowed to drive in Georgia. After you turn 21 that restriction can be lifted by going to an examination station in Georgia. Then you will be able to driver interstate. When applying you will need to provide the Georgia Department of Driver's Services (DDS) with your current, valid driver's license, your social security card, and your birth certificate or green card.
After the application process you must take both a written and a driving test. The written test can be taken at a driver's license office that is closest to where you live. The driving test, though, can only be taken, by appointment only, at a Georgia Department of Driver's Services in Albany, Between, Brunswick, Dalton, Gainesville, Jackson, Milledgeville or Thomson. Depending on the endorsements you need, additional skills and knowledge tests may need to be taken. For instance, if you drive a truck with air brakes, an endorsement is needed. You will need a Hazmat endorsement if you will be transporting hazardous materials, plus you will be required to have a background check done by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
In order to drive interstate with a Class A CDL, you are required to pass a physical exam, our vision must be at least 20/40, even with glasses, you cannot be colorblind, and in each eye you must have a 70-degree field of vision. If you pass your physical exam you will receive a medical certificate from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). This certificate must be carried with you at all times.
