To obtain your CDL in South Dakota, individuals must be 21 years old to drive out-of-state and HAZMAT vehicles, and individuals over the age of 18 can obtain a CDL but are not permitted to drive out-of-state or hazardous cargo.

People also must pass several tests to obtain a CDL, like a physical, knowledge and driving tests. There are some fees associated with getting your CDL, like the fee for a commercial driver license is $15.00. There is also a $5.00 fee for each endorsement to a commercial license.

People who have any of the following cannot apply or may have their CDL in the state of South Dakota revoked:

  • Commission of any felony in commercial or non-commercial motor vehicle involving the manufacture, distribution, or dispensing of a controlled substance
  • Refusal of chemical/drug analysis
  • Convicted of Driving While Intoxicated
  • Using a commercial or non-commercial motor vehicle in the commission of a felony (non-traffic)
  • Causing a fatality through the negligent operation of a commercial motor vehicle
