North Carolina CDL Requirements

In order to apply for a CDL in North Carolina, you will first have to apply for a learner's permit and learn to drive commercial vehicles. When applying, you will need to gather documents from these six categories:

  • Proof of residency
  • Proof of age and identity
  • Proof of social security number
  • Proof of liability insurance
  • Proof of clear driving record
  • Medical and physical requirement

A learner's permit in North Carolina will cost $15, and if you need a duplicate, the charge is $10. General CDL application fees start at $30, with an extra charge of $3 per endorsement. Duplicate CDLs cost $10, and yearly renewals are $15 (plus an extra charge per endorsement).

North Carolina is part of the International Registration Plan (IRP) which authorizes registration of over 1.7 million commercial vehicles. Under the Plan, your apportioned vehicles may conduct both interstate and intrastate operations. The Plan does not, however, prevent the need to register with other state agencies (such as the Fuel Tax Division) or to have appropriate intrastate authority from each state’s regulatory commission to conduct intrastate for-hire operations.
