To receive your CDL license in New Mexico, commercial drivers must train, take a written and skills test and be declared fit for the job, according to federal standards, by a medical doctor. There are also age restrictions; you must be at least 18 to be a commercial driver in New Mexico and 21 if you want to drive out of state.

To be eligible for a CDL you must have a clean driving record and be able to speak English well enough to read signs, prepare reports and communicate clearly. Transporting hazardous materials requires you to pass a background records check and be fingerprinted. The Transportation Security Act (TSA) is responsible for conducting the necessary background checks.

There are a number of public third-party CDL examiners you can test for in New Mexico.
