To obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) in the state of Mississippi, you must be at least 17 years old and hold a Regular Class R driver's license. But first, you should determine which CDL meets your needs:
- Class A: required to operate vehicles that weigh more than 26,000 pounds or a tractor/trailer combination that exceeds 26,000 pounds.
- Class B: required to operate a vehicle carrying more than 15 passengers.
- Class C: required to operate a vehicle that hauls hazardous materials.
- Class D: required to operate a vehicle that weighs less than 26,000 pounds for commercial reasons. If you drive a pickup truck, you don’t need a CDL unless you are hauling hazardous materials.
Before you head out to take the driving portion of the CDL exam, be sure you have the following:
- Your valid regular MS driver's license, a CDL learner's permit, and your completed application for the specific CDL you wish to obtain.
- Another driver to accompany you. This driver must hold the same class CDL license (or greater) as that for which you are applying.
- Current medical card.
- The same class of vehicle you will be driving on the job once you obtain your CDL. This vehicle must pass inspection before any tests will be administered.
- Social security card.
- Proof of residency.
- Appropriate fees.
