Basic requirements for a Maryland CDL certification are as follows:

  • You must be 21 to drive a commercial vehicle beyond the borders of Maryland. Those between 18 and 21 are limited to trying for an intrastate license only.
  • You will need to be at least 21 years of age to acquire a hazardous materials endorsement.
  • Pass a Department of Transportation physical and provide the examiner with the report or card. You can also request a medical waiver in some instances.
  • Own a standard class driver license.
  • Proof of citizenship

A Maryland CDL test can be an extensive ordeal, so prepare at least 4 hours for the total test. It comes in a written section and then a 3-part skills test performed under professional supervision both on and off the road. The skills test is actually three separate tests administered in sequential order. You need to pass one to move on to the next:

  • Pre-Trip Inspection: You are given 45 minutes to complete a comprehensive check of the vehicle. Sounds easy until you remember what type of vehicles you are dealing with.
  • Basic Skills/Maneuvering: You are put through a bevy of 10-minute tasks, which can involve backing up to a dock, steering around cones, and braking on a closed course.
  • On-Road Test: Basically a 40-minute drive around town, putting all of your knowledge to the test in a real life situation.
