To qualify for a commercial driver license (CDL) in Kansas, you must be 18 years old for intrastate driving, or 21 years old to drive interstate routes.
There are 3 types of CDL certifications in Kansas.
- Kansas Class A CDL: For truck drivers operating vehicles with a combined GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds.
- Kansas Class B CDL: For truck drivers operating a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.
- Kansas Class C CDL: For operators driving vehicles that don't meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers. This certification also includes permissions for operating vehicles that transport hazardous materials.
At Kansas CDL testing facilities, you will need to pass a comprehensive check of your skills under professional supervision. The Kansas CDL test is made up of three parts including:
- Pre-trip inspection
- Basic operating skills test
- Basic driving skills test
You will be tested on your knowledge of the vehicle and your overall driving skills. You must pass each section of testing in order to move on to the next section.
