The Illinois interstate CDL is for drivers over 21, but the Illinois intrastate CDL can be obtained by drivers who are 18 years old.

The basic written test for the Illinois CDL consists of a multiple-choice general knowledge quiz. The vehicle-based testing includes three areas: a pre-trip inspection process, a basic controls test in the truck cab, and a monitored road test for driving skills.

The information contained in this manual, along with general operating and driving skills for your vehicle should be all that you need to study to gain an Illinois CDL license.

If you wish to gain special certifications to haul hazardous materials, pull special trailers, or to drive tank or passenger vehicles you will need one or more of these proper endorsements:

  • Hazardous Materials (H) - requires a background check.
  • Tank Vehicles (N) - a vehicle with tanks that contain liquids or gaseous materials exceeding 1000 gallons.
  • Passenger (P) - Bus drivers, tour guides, chartered trips vehicles.
  • School Bus (S) - This will be used in addition to the (P) class license certification for transporting primary or secondary age school children.
  • Double/Triple (T) – multiple payload carriages.
