In order to obtain your Alabama Commercial Driver’s License, you need to have a current and valid Alabama driver’s license, as well as your Social Security card or proof of Social Security number. You also need to obtain a current Department of Transportation medical certificate. In order to pass your CDL test, you’ll need to first pass the general knowledge test.

Specific vehicle types also require additional knowledge tests, such as the passenger transport test, combination vehicles test, hazardous materials test, tankers test, doubles/triples test or School Bus test. Upon successful completion of your knowledge tests, you’ll take your skills test, including pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control and on-road tests.
